View Full Version : Shared Hosting Servers Upgrade/Additions.

10-23-2004, 03:25 PM
In the next one or two weeks preiod, we plan to upgrade and/or add the following servers:

- mail1.fluidhosting.com. We have added mail2.fluidhosting.com few months ago to take some load off mail1.fluidhosting.com, however mail1.fluidhosting.com is still very busy, especially since it also process/checks for SPAM and VIRUS. So mail1.fluidhosting.com will be upgraded from P3T/1.13 GHz to P4/3.2 GHz.
- All UNIX webservers will be upgraded from Xeon 2.8 GHz to Xeon 3.06 GHz. In addition, we will add memory to our WEB1 webserver. This will involve swapping the hard drive to a new server to minimize any downtime.
- MSSQL server will be migrated to the new server for improved performance and reliability. The new server will be Xeon 2.8 GHz (currently it is P3T/1.13GHz)
- Add new Unix web server.
- Add new Windows web server.
- Add new Database server.

Stay tuned for more improvements.

Very nice! :)

Are those Xeons single physical proc w/HT, or dual physical procs w/HT?

10-23-2004, 07:20 PM
Those are single proc with HT. We will start doing Dual Procs with HT when FreeBSD has a better SMP support. At this moment, having dual procs on FreeBSD is not as efficient as one would like. Better to separate the load onto new servers then adding second (physical) processor.

Makes sense -- I keep forgetting your running FreeBSD instead of Linux ;)

10-23-2004, 08:01 PM
What are they named? :D

i.e. John, Dave, Hary, Alex, etc...

10-23-2004, 08:04 PM
Probably the names they've always had.

10-23-2004, 08:30 PM
No, we no longer use that names .. Those names were chosen out of my interest in high energy particle physics. But it's getting confusing after a while, not to mention there are only finite number of fundamental particles :) So lately I have started to rename them all, to make it simpler.

web[x].fluidhosting.com for Unix web servers
win[x].fluidhosting.com for Windows web servers
db[x].fluidhosting.com for database servers, in particular, mysql[x].fluidhosting.com and pgsql[x].fluidhosting.com
mssql[s].fluidhosting.com for MSSQL server
mail[x].fluidhosting.com for mail servers

Same goes with our VPS servers. Used to name then by group VIII atoms (helium, neon, etc). It now goes by VPS[x].fluidvps.com.

Can't be any simpler than this :D

10-23-2004, 08:48 PM
True, much simpler.

But, the names just aren't cool though. :)

10-23-2004, 08:50 PM
I better not have something cool, then having some confusing cool things :D

10-23-2004, 10:07 PM
It's actually so uncool that it's cool -- sort of a Post-Post-Modern-Pseudo-Reductivist-Neo-Information-Age [but Pre-Technophile-Minimalist] apeal, if you know what I mean ... with perhaps a Roccoco twist, yes?

10-23-2004, 10:21 PM
Now, that's a complex label. WOW.

10-23-2004, 10:27 PM
you should convert the alphabet of the names to binary and name the servers accordingly evilbanana

10-23-2004, 10:30 PM
HEX would be far better. :)

10-25-2004, 01:01 AM
I'm back guys. Been really, really busy.

You could always name the servers like they name hurricanes :)

Hey, I love the dancing bananas!

10-25-2004, 01:09 AM
Hey, welcome back Lisa!

Be careful with the evil banana :)

10-25-2004, 01:17 AM
Busy you say? Where were you? And I dont want to hear any of the following:
1. watching the redsox games
2. watching ashlee simpson make an ass our of herself on SNL ;)
3. work :P

10-25-2004, 01:54 AM
Does romantic timeout count for an excuse? :shhh: :O

Actually, besides work, I have been working on 3 websites plus the one I am helping my dad with.

By the way, I can't wait until they make the switch to you guys. The webhost the bowling association is using now doesn't have ANYTHING available. No php, no SSI, no nothing. It has been a real treat I can tell you.

10-25-2004, 01:59 AM
That method would take to long. We'd need a team to decide on each name... :)

Check list:
- Unix webservers will be upgraded this Sunday.
- Two sets of firewall will start filtering both our incoming and outgoing links this Sunday.
